The Legacy Of Kobe Bryant Lives On Through His Past Conversations With Legends And Stars

On January 26, 2020, NBA legend Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gianna, and seven others passed away, leaving the NBA and the world in tears and at a loss for words.

However, Bryant's legacy and memory live on through the conversations he had and the influence he bestowed upon fans. To say that Kobe Bryant influenced the sport of basketball does not do his legacy any justice. Bryant was talented, passionate, and spirited (with teammates and opponents) on the court. Kobe never stopped working and always wanted to improve something.

While it is true that Kobe was tough on his teammates, he ultimately wanted to motivate people to do their best. He was a team player through and through, wanting those closest to him to reach their full potential.

Kobe loved the game of basketball and wanted nothing more than to share his passion with anyone willing to learn. Bryant was regularly in attendance at the WNBA's Los Angeles Sparks games.

Bryant recognized the talent of female players and showed them respect not ordinarily given by men who watch basketball. He worked informally with Sparks players to help improve their skills and acted as an advisor to the team. Bryant worked with women on all levels of the sport.

NBA superstar DeMar DeRozan was born in Compton, California. He grew up idolizing Kobe and attended his 2007 skills academy. DeRozan patterned his game after the Mamba and even wears Bryant's signature basketball shoes during games.

DeRozan spoke admirably about Bryant's work ethic both on and off the court, going from his gym in Thousand Oaks, California, to play at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

The humility DeRozan prepares and performs with to this day comes from lessons with Bryant. "Everything I learned came from Kobe. Everything. Take Kobe away; I wouldn't be here. I wouldn't have love. I wouldn't have passion, the drive. Everything, everything, came from him."

Kobe had four daughters named Natalia, Bianka, Capri, and Gianna, the latter of whom sadly passed away alongside her father. Bryant took particular interest in Gianna's desire to play basketball.

After hanging up his ball shoes, Kobe embarked on several independent projects outside of playing basketball, like producing movies.

In 2017, with the help of director and animator Glen Keane, Bryant released and narrated the animated feature, Dear Basketball. The film was based on Kobe's letter in the Players' Tribune on November 29, 2015, in which he announced his retirement. Dear Basketball would earn Bryant a different kind of award than he was used to, an Oscar.
