Serena Williams Is The First Athlete on Forbes’ List of Richest Self-Made Women

Serena Williams is a woman who needs no introduction. Widely regarded as the greatest women's tennis player of all time, she's been ranked No.1 in singles eight times since 2002 and holds the record for the most Grand Slam titles in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles. In 2016, Williams became the highest paid female athlete, bringing in an estimated $29 million in prize money and endorsements that year. While some might retire with their wealth, Williams kept going and going. Not only that, she has her sights set on opportunities outside of tennis and has proven she's a smart businesswoman, too.

In June 2019, at 37-years-old, Forbes officially named Williams the Richest Self-Made Female Athlete and landed her on the cover. Today, Williams has an estimated net worth of $225 million and now has $85 million in prize money from 72 single titles. Of the court, Wiliams is savvy with her business deals with top brands including Nike, Pepsi, Gatorade, and Intel. In 2014, she launched her own investment firm, Serena Ventures, focusing on investing in companies that embrace diversity. Together Williams and her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian make a high-profile couple who are active participants in charities, activism and were guests at Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan's royal wedding in 2018.
