Jacques-Louis David was a great admirer of Napoleon Bonaparte, and while that showed in all of his paintings of the French emperor, it was particularly clear in this heroic-looking depiction of him taking a treacherous alpine route on horseback. The reality — as depicted later by Paul Delaroche — was that Napoleon actually crossed the Alps on a mule under far more calm conditions.
